Snowshoeing at Riisitunturi

Most of the winter the path is trodden. After fresh snow it is another walk.

The short answer

Snowshoes are usually not needed at Riisitunturi: Metsähallitus writes that over the winter the trail becomes trodden and can be walked without them, but that they are needed in early winter or after heavy snowfall. Lapland Activities runs a day tour of about 5 km on snowshoes with snowshoe hire included, and Wild about Lapland may bring snowshoes when the snow calls for them.

What Metsähallitus says about snowshoes

The trail page for Riisitunturi on luontoon.fi is direct about it. Over the course of winter the trail becomes trodden and can also be walked without snowshoes; snowshoes are needed in early winter or after heavy snowfall. The park brochure adds that snowshoes are necessary on the trail immediately after a snowfall. Once the path is trodden, groups usually walk it in winter boots. One reviewer describes the path as "on a path therefore not through thick snow".

The snowshoe day with Lapland Activities

Lapland Activities drives from Rovaniemi by people carrier, about two and a half hours each way by its count, and spends the walk of about 5 km on snowshoes, with the hire included. Lunch is three courses of Lappish food cooked over an open fire, with hot drinks. The group is limited to 8 and children must be at least 8. Pickup covers accommodation less than 15 km from the city centre. Winter clothing is not in the list of inclusions, so bring your own layers. The listing is new and has no reviews yet.

Snowshoes as an option

Wild about Lapland writes that it may take snowshoes along. In practice that depends on the snow on the day; on a trodden trail the group walks in boots. A reviewer of the Arctic Photo Experience tour reports that the guide brought snowshoes for the group although they were not part of the package. If snowshoeing is the point of your trip, ask the operator before booking rather than relying on that.

Snowshoes and the path in the reviews

The snowshoe tour has no reviews yet. These two come from other tours and describe the path and snowshoes on the day.

“… Our guide, Matt, has been so nice and helpful. He knows what his doing and he prepared everything for us. Even though snow shoe is not included in the trip. He brought equipments for us so we could experience it. …”
Daisy · United Kingdom · December 2023 Hike with a Photographer · Arctic Photo Experience
“… Some fantastic pictures from the guides. The trek was reasonably short and on a path therefore not through thick snow. Guides were excellent at matching the pace to the group to ensure everyone has the best experience possible. Lunch was minimal of cooking a sausage over the fire but all traditional Finnish experience. Quite expensive for the day but for us it was worth it and we all enjoyed it.”
