The walk up Riisitunturi

From the forest to the open fell, on a path trodden for most of the winter.

The short answer

On a Riisitunturi day tour you walk about 4 to 5 km, depending on the operator, climbing from the forest to the open fell with the snow-covered spruces and coming back the same day. Metsähallitus writes that over the winter the trail becomes trodden and can be walked without snowshoes, which are needed in early winter or after heavy snowfall. Reviewers mostly describe the walk as easy to manage, though some operators call it demanding.

The distances in the table are the ones each listing gives. They differ less than the titles suggest: almost every tour walks a loop of about four kilometres, the photographer and snowshoe tours five, and the combination with Korouoma two to four, because the day also covers a frozen waterfall.

Distance tour by tour

Wild about Lapland lists a walk of about 4 km, BookLapland about 4 km at your own pace on the coach option, Beyond Arctic about 4 km. Experience Tours Lapland names a 4.3 km hiking trail with a campfire break halfway. Arctic Safari Guides gives 4 to 5 km, Arctic Photo Experience and Lapland Activities 5 km, the latter on snowshoes. Aurora Monkeys keep it to 2 to 4 km depending on the group. Reviewers measure the same walks at four to five kilometres, one at about 4.5 km.

From the forest to the open fell

The walk climbs to the summit, which Metsähallitus gives as 465 metres. Beyond Arctic writes that the group climbs high up the fells and that the trail can be demanding, My Lapland Travel that you ascend towards open fell areas at a relaxed pace, Aurora Monkeys that you hike to the top of the hill. One reviewer notes it was windy enough at the top that you could not stay long. Several reviewers mention a hut with a fire on the way, where the sausages are grilled.

Snowshoes, usually not

Metsähallitus calls the winter route the Riisin rääpäsy Trail (4.3 km) and notes that it is not specifically marked as a snowshoeing trail. It also writes that over the course of winter the trail becomes trodden and can also be walked without snowshoes, and that snowshoes are needed in early winter or after heavy snowfall. That matches the tours: Wild about Lapland may bring snowshoes if the snow calls for them, and only Lapland Activities builds its day around them. The snowshoe page has both.

Ice on the path

Arctic Safari Guides warns that winter trails may occasionally be icy and hands out ice cleats when they are. Other listings do not mention grips. Good winter boots with a firm sole help on a trodden, frozen path; the clothing page shows which tours lend boots.

Fitness

BookLapland recommends normal mobility and moderate fitness. Experience Tours Lapland marks its tour as unsuitable for people with back problems, Wild about Lapland for people with heart problems or other medical conditions. Aurora Monkeys exclude people over 60 and over 100 kg. Reviewers who are not regular hikers mostly found the walk manageable. A few felt the guide set too fast a pace, so tell the operator if you need a slower one.

The walk in the reviews

Reviewers describe the path as trodden and manageable. Wind at the top is the complaint that comes up most.

“We had a wonderful Riisitunturi day tour! The drive from Rovaniemi to Riisitunturi National Park took about two hours and the scenery along the way was already beautiful. The hike was about 5 km and fairly easy, making it enjoyable for everyone in our group. … Winter overalls and gear were provided, which made the tour very comfortable and allowed us to fully enjoy the snow. …”
MargadErdene · Germany · March 2026 Fell Hike with Edited Photos · Beyond Arctic
“… Some fantastic pictures from the guides. The trek was reasonably short and on a path therefore not through thick snow. Guides were excellent at matching the pace to the group to ensure everyone has the best experience possible. Lunch was minimal of cooking a sausage over the fire but all traditional Finnish experience. Quite expensive for the day but for us it was worth it and we all enjoyed it.”
Samantha · United Kingdom · February 2026 Fell Hike with Edited Photos · Beyond Arctic
“… Our guide Emily was so kind, helpful, and attentive throughout the day. She took great photos of us and always made sure to take breaks to check that everyone was comfortable and okay. It was quite windy at the top of the mountain so you can’t stay there too long, but the views were absolutely worth it. …”
