Riisitunturi with children

Minimum ages run from 5 to 14, and the day is long whichever tour you pick.

The short answer

Children can join a Riisitunturi tour from age 5 with My Lapland Travel, from 8 with Beyond Arctic and Lapland Activities, and from 14 on the Korouoma combination by Aurora Monkeys. Many listings give no minimum age at all, so ask the operator before you book. With about two hours of driving each way by the operators' count, the day lasts eight to nine hours.

Minimum ages tour by tour

My Lapland Travel accepts children from 5, at a relaxed pace with a lunch cooked by the fire and pickup within 10 km of the centre. Beyond Arctic is not suitable for children under 8 and lends warm clothing and winter boots. Lapland Activities also starts at 8, with a walk on snowshoes. Aurora Monkeys take guests from 14 on the combination with Korouoma. Wild about Lapland, BookLapland and Experience Tours Lapland state no age on their listings.

A long day in the car

The drive is the hardest part for most children. The operators count about two hours each way, and the whole day takes eight or nine hours. Reviewers mention a toilet stop on the way and, on some tours, minivans with seats facing each other. Bring snacks, something to do on the ride and a change of socks.

On the trail

The walk is about 4 to 5 km on a trodden path and climbs to the open fell. Reviewers who are not regular hikers mostly found it manageable; Beyond Arctic notes that the trail can be demanding. Wind at the top cools children quickly, so plan short stops there and keep the warm layers handy. My Lapland Travel adapts the pace to the group, according to one reviewer.

Check clothing sizes before you book. Listings that lend overalls and boots do not say which sizes they stock, and a child in borrowed boots that are too big will tire fast on the climb.

Shorter outings near Rovaniemi

If a full day on the road is too much for your children, a snowshoe walk close to town gives a taste of the snowy forest in a few hours. These are compared on rovaniemisnowshoe.com.

Pace and the day in the reviews

Reviewers of the tour that takes children from 5 describe a guide who adapts the pace; others note how easy the walk felt.

“We had a wonderful day trip to Riisitunturi National Park with Perttu. The drive there was already an experience in itself, watching how the landscape and nature changed along the way. He patiently answered all of our questions and adapted the tour to our pace. …”

“… During the tour we stopped for a barbecue and grilled sausages, which was a really nice experience out in nature. The hike itself was about 4.5 km, which felt like the perfect distance. The whole trip took around 8 hours including the drive from Rovaniemi and lunch. Our guide picked us up directly from the hotel, which made everything very easy. …”

Questions and answers

What is the minimum age for a Riisitunturi tour?

It depends on the tour. My Lapland Travel accepts children from five, Beyond Arctic and Lapland Activities from eight, and the Korouoma combination from fourteen. Many listings give no age, so ask the operator.

Is Riisitunturi suitable for young children?

The walk itself is manageable for many children, but the day is long and much of it is in a vehicle. Cold and wind at the top are the other challenge.

Do tours provide children's winter clothing?

The listings that lend overalls and boots do not say which sizes they have. Ask the operator before booking.
