What to wear at Riisitunturi

Some tours lend overalls and boots, others expect you dressed for the fell.

The short answer

Wear warm base layers, a hat and mittens, and find out if your tour lends the outer layer. Wild about Lapland, Beyond Arctic, BookLapland and Arctic GM include winter clothing or overalls, most of them with boots. Arctic Photo Experience, Aurora Monkeys, My Lapland Travel and Lapland Activities list no clothing, and Arctic Safari Guides calls proper winter clothing and boots essential, with temperatures from -5 to -25 °C or colder.

Tours that lend overalls and boots

BookLapland gives out professional Arctic winter overalls suitable down to -40 °C, and winter boots if needed, on both its coach option and its guided group. Experience Tours Lapland lists winter clothes and shoes as not included, on the guided hike and the bus seat alike. Wild about Lapland lists equipment, professional winter clothing and boots; one reviewer notes that boots and an overall can be borrowed at the office in the centre before the drive. Beyond Arctic includes warm clothing and winter boots, Arctic GM thermal overalls.

Tours where you bring your own

Arctic Photo Experience, Aurora Monkeys and My Lapland Travel list no clothing. Aurora Monkeys simply ask you to dress warmly. Lapland Activities includes the snowshoes but not clothing. Arctic Safari Guides writes that proper winter clothing and winter boots are essential and that temperatures may range from -5 °C to -25 °C or colder; the guide brings ice cleats when the trail is icy. If you do not own Arctic gear, these are the tours to ask about before booking, or choose one that lends it.

Layers under the overall

A lent overall is the outer shell, not the whole outfit. Underneath, wear a thermal base layer of wool or synthetic fabric, a warm mid layer and thick socks, and bring a hat, a neck warmer and mittens. Leave cotton at home, as it stays damp once you sweat on the climb. Reviewers mention the wind at the top and, in January, temperatures around -30 °C.

Reviewers mention wind at the top that makes it hard to stay long, and one tells future guests to dress in layers. Pack an extra warm layer you can pull on over the rest whenever the group stops.

Footwear

Most of the walk is on a trodden path, so warm winter boots with a firm, grippy sole matter more than anything technical. Where boots are lent, wear thick socks and tell the operator your size when you book. On icy days Arctic Safari Guides hands out ice cleats; on other tours ask whether the guide carries grips.

Cold and clothing in the reviews

Reviewers who got overalls on the day mention them. The others give advice on layers.

“Our trip was perfectly organized. Our guide, Mirko, ensured our comfort and warmth in the freezing -30 degrees, by providing overlayers. The landscape was breathtaking, and the BBQ was almost unlimited, including a vegetarian option. …”
Damian · Netherlands · January 2026 Snow Monsters by Coach or Small Group · BookLapland
“… We were offered hot drinks throughout the journey. Went on the 5km hike to the top. Had a lovely gathering around the bonfire. Elis served the group pork sausages and more hot drinks on top. … It was cold no doubt about that. Just make sure you’re dressed in layers!”
Syafiqah · Malaysia · January 2025 Guided Hike or Bus Only · Experience Tours Lapland
“We were picked up by our guide Marta, who brought us to the office in the city centre, where it's also possible to borrow warm boots and an overall if needed. The drive to Riisitunturi National Park took about two hours, with a convenient stop halfway to stretch and refresh. The hiking route was around 4 km, easy to manage, and suitable even if you’re not an experienced hiker. …”
